Company Grad

“All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.”

So July has been a pretty crazy month for me. (Hence being totally absent from the blogosphere for while!)

I managed to graduate with First Class Honours from my Fashion Promotion Degree, whilst being selected to guest edit the October issue of Company Magazine for their Graduate Takeover.

Me and my fellow Fashion Grads

Mum and Dad

I'm currently sitting here in Victoria Station, latte in hand, picking at a plate of nachos with the other, reminiscing over the last 10 days... with a smile on my face, it has to be said.

I won't bore you with the tiny details of my trip.. but I thought I'd share my highlights of Company with you, as I know many of my readers are Company readers, and will be applying for next year's Graduate Takeover! (I highly recommend you do, for it is, in a word.. Amazing!! ..and so incredibly hands on).

My first day in the office began with the first editorial meeting of the issue. Most of the team, plus us grads as new additions shuffled in to Company Editor Victoria's office. Walls lined in statement paper and previous covers accessorising them, it seems Victoria had dressed her office like she dresses herself. Tres chic.

Ideas were thrown in the air, most were caught and praised for their innovativeness, none were batted away with disgust (for this was certainly not Miranda Priestly's office).

Company Archives

I won't delve into the nature of the topics, you'll just have to wait until the September issue. What I will say is that I got to write my own feature for the issue, in addition to interviewing both Fearne Cotton and every 15 year old's dream, Connor Maynard. What was so great about that was that I got to transcribe the interview afterwards, completing the process from start to finish. Brainstorming interview questions for the likes of Olivia Palermo, and contacting PRs for credit info was just the tip of the iceberg of my time at Company.

The fashion content is truly beautiful thanks to the quartet of fashionistas Oonagh, Laura, Emma and Ruby. The rest of the team are really amazing at what they do, and great people to observe and learn from. From Lexxi, the rapunzel-haired fashionista never to be seen without her camera who was once an intern at Company and "kept coming back" (that's why her hair's so big... It's full of fashion secrets), to Lena, features writer extraordinaire, and a dab hand at customising Justin Beiber t-shirts, the team is really really great.

If this week's taught me anything, it's that there really is only one career for me, and if this week is anything to go by, I seem to be on the right track. Following your dreams will get you far.. hard work and perseverance will get you even further. I hope to be sitting on (or at least near) a fashion features desk again sometime soon.

And for now... on to the next.
